Pet-Friendly Design: Integrated Feeding Stations and Hidden Litter Box Cabinetry

We treat our pets like family. We buy them the best food, the softest beds, and endless toys. But let’s be honest: pet “stuff” is rarely beautiful.

Design-conscious homeowners often struggle with the “pet paradox”: You have a stunning, custom-designed kitchen, but in the corner, there is an ugly plastic litter box, a wire dog crate, or a set of mismatched bowls that you trip over every morning.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

At Delta Woodworks, we believe that pet-friendly design should be seamless. We are seeing a huge surge in requests for “Barkitecture”—custom cabinetry designed specifically to accommodate pets without sacrificing the style of the home.

Here are the top ways to integrate your furry friends into your cabinetry design.

1. The Integrated Feeding Station

The days of kicking the water bowl across the kitchen floor are over. A custom feeding station creates a dedicated, permanent spot for meals.

The Design:

  • The Niche: We can build a recessed niche at the end of a kitchen island or cabinetry run. The bowls sit securely in a quartz or wood shelf, elevated to a comfortable height for your pet (which is better for their digestion!).
  • The Pot-Filler: For the ultimate luxury, we can install a pot-filler faucet directly above the water bowl. You can refill fresh water without ever picking up the bowl.
  • The Toe-Kick Drawer: For smaller kitchens, we can build the bowls into a low drawer near the floor (the “toe kick”). When it’s mealtime, you tap the drawer open. When guests arrive, you slide it shut, and the bowls disappear completely.

2. The Hidden Litter Box (The “Purr-fect” Disguise)

The litter box is the single biggest design challenge for cat owners. It’s unsightly and smelly, but it needs to be accessible.

The Design: We build a custom cabinet—usually in a laundry room, mudroom, or bathroom vanity—that looks like regular storage from the outside.

  • The Entry: We cut a decorative shape or a discreet mouse-hole on the side of the cabinet for the cat to enter.
  • The Access: The front cabinet doors open wide, allowing you to easily slide the tray out for cleaning.
  • Ventilation: This is key. We can install a small, silent exhaust fan inside the cabinet that vents to the outside (just like a bathroom fan), ensuring odors never drift into your home.

3. Bulk Food Storage

Those 40-pound bags of kibble are heavy, ugly, and hard to seal. They usually end up sitting on the floor of the pantry or taking up valuable shelf space.

The Design: We install heavy-duty tilt-out bins or deep pull-out drawers lined with metal or food-safe plastic.

  • Freshness: These bins seal tight, keeping the food fresh and pests out.
  • Convenience: The bin tilts out for easy scooping, then snaps shut, completely hiding the food behind a beautiful cabinet face.

4. The Built-In Dog Crate

If you crate-train your dog, you know that the wire metal cage is a major eyesore. It takes up floor space and ruins the flow of a room.

The Design: We integrate the crate directly into your furniture. This works beautifully as a base for a laundry room folding table, or even as a media console in the living room.

  • Materials: We use decorative metal grating or sturdy wood slats that match the rest of your cabinetry.
  • Function: It serves as a safe, cozy den for your dog, but to the rest of the world, it just looks like a beautiful piece of custom built-in furniture.

5. The “Pet Shower” Station

For larger mudrooms, the dog wash station is becoming a standard luxury feature in Florida homes (especially for beach lovers!).

The Design: We build a tiled, waist-high washing station flanked by custom waterproof cabinetry. The cabinets hold towels, shampoos, and brushes, keeping the wet dog mess contained to one easy-to-clean zone before they run into the rest of the house.

Design for the Whole Family

Your home should work for everyone who lives in it—on two legs or four. By planning for your pets during the design phase, you can eliminate the clutter and keep your home looking pristine.
