The “Invisible” Guest Room: Custom Murphy Beds & Wall Systems for Flex Spaces

In Florida real estate, square footage is a premium commodity—especially if you live in a condo or a townhome. Dedicating an entire room to a “Guest Bedroom” that only gets used two weeks a year when the in-laws visit feels like a massive waste of space.

But you still need a place for them to sleep. The result? You end up with a cramped room that tries to be a home office but is dominated by a queen-sized bed you never use.

The solution is the Flex Room.

By utilizing custom Murphy beds (also known as wall beds) and integrated cabinetry systems, you can have a full-time, high-end home office that transforms into a luxury guest suite in seconds. Here is how we design the “Invisible” Guest Room.

Not Your Grandfather’s Murphy Bed

If the term “Murphy Bed” makes you think of a squeaky, dangerous contraption from an old comedy movie, it’s time to look again.

Modern wall bed hardware is sophisticated, safe, and incredibly smooth. At Delta Woodworks, we use hydraulic piston mechanisms that allow the bed to be raised and lowered with the touch of a finger. There are no heavy springs to snap, and the bed stays perfectly balanced at any angle.

The “Disappearing Act”

The magic of a custom wall system is that when the bed is closed, you don’t know it’s a bed.

To the naked eye, it looks like a beautiful, custom-built wall unit.

  • The Look: We design a seamless wall of cabinetry. The center panel (which hides the mattress) is flanked by functional storage—bookshelves, wardrobe cabinets, or display nooks.
  • The Finish: Whether you want a modern high-gloss white lacquer for your Miami condo or a warm walnut finish for your suburban home, the unit acts as an architectural focal point, not just “furniture.”

The “Office-By-Day” Solution

The most popular configuration we build is the Office/Guest Combo.

In this design, we integrate a custom desk directly into the unit.

  1. The Drop-Down Desk: Some designs feature a desk surface attached to the front of the bed panel. When you pull the bed down, the desk mechanism keeps the surface level—meaning you don’t even have to clear your papers or close your laptop to open the bed!
  2. The Side Desk: Alternatively, we build a permanent L-shaped desk extending from the side cabinetry. This gives you a massive, permanent workspace that is completely unaffected by the bed’s position.

Storage Where You Need It

A standalone bed takes up 30-40 square feet of floor space and offers zero storage. A custom wall system creates storage.

  • Wardrobes: We can install tall cabinets on either side of the bed with hanging rods inside, giving your guests a place to hang their clothes (or giving you extra closet space year-round).
  • Nightstands: Where do the guests put their phones? We build integrated niches inside the bed cabinet with built-in USB outlets and reading lights. When the bed opens, the nightstands are instantly revealed.
  • Filing Drawers: For the home office, the lower cabinetry can be fitted with heavy-duty file drawers to keep your paperwork organized.

Perfect for Condo Living

For our clients in high-rise condos, space optimization is critical. A custom wall bed system allows a “One Bedroom + Den” apartment to function like a true Two Bedroom apartment. It allows you to maximize your view and your floor space during the day, entertaining guests in a large, open room, while still retaining the ability to host overnight visitors comfortably.

Reclaim Your Square Footage

Your home should work for you 365 days a year, not just when company calls. A custom wall system gives you the best of both worlds: a productive office by day and a comfortable bedroom by night.
